Shocking Service at H&M Online

I was absolutely delighted when H&M set up an online store, it was something I'd been waiting to happen for a long time. Little did I know that ordering from them would turn into the most stressful, drawn out ordeal I've ever experienced. Here's the whole sorry story of my experience...

Checkout
I found the checkout procedure quite unclear, with options to 'pay later' via various methods, and the box to 'pay now' hidden underneath. What really confused me is that during checkout it stated whether an item was in stock and if not, when to expect it. Most shockingly of all, some of the expected arrival times were in a few months time. I ordered in September and I was being told I could expect some items in November. Since when do shops allow customers to purchase items that aren't in stock? It makes no sense. If they're selling things that won't be available for yonks, what's to stop them adding their summer stock now?! It's ridiculous.

Delivery Options
In short, there aren't any. According to H&M, customers will receive items 'around one week after we have received your order but during busy periods it may take longer'. There are no options for express, standard or saver delivery. P&P is simply £3.90. For those who are unfortunate enough to have ordered something that's not in stock along with an item that is available, you can choose whether to have everything arrive together (in 2-3 months time in my case) or you can choose to have your orders arrive as soon as they're in stock, but this means you're charged £3.90 P&P each time. So the 7 items arrived in about 5 different parcels. And no, it didn't matter that I had to wait a quarter of a year to receive my items, I still had to pay for separate postage.

Delivery Time
I ordered 7 items back in September. I waited patiently and received a few items. It then became time to turn my calendar page to December, and the last of my items had still not arrived. A couple of days in and I received a note from H&M in the post saying there would be a delay in the delivery. No reason was given, there would just be a delay and I could expect them at the end of December. As if waiting 3 months isn't long enough, there's even more delay! I'd had enough by this point and wanted to cancel the remaining orders but as this isn't an option online I rang customer services and did it that way. It was a relief to have it all over with.

Logging In
Most online shops simply request you enter your email address and a password you've chosen to access your accounts and orders. Not H&M. You are given a 9 digit customer number and a 4 digit password - which they choose. When it came to logging in I wasn't even aware they'd picked a password for me, and so I had to trawl through my emails to locate one. I actually couldn't find an email they'd sent with the password and so I requested a new one. To request a new password you need to send them your customer number. More trawling to locate this. And if you don't have your customer number or your password? Well, you won't be logging in anytime soon.

Tracking Orders
When I did actually manage to access 'My Page' on the site to track my parcels, a page of German appeared. I may have got an A at GCSE level German but that does not mean I want to try and put it to use when shopping. When I was lucky enough to have the page load in English on a separate occasion, there was simply no information about the whereabouts of the parcel.

Returns & Refunds
After waiting a ridiculously long time for (some) of my items to arrive, I didn't like a few of them. I was all set to return them to the store when I read the invoice and it stated you can return in store, but don't expect a refund. Only credit notes are offered. I wanted a refund so I had to purchase large plastic envelopes ready for posting. At the Post Office, one of the packages went through without any problems. However, with the package containing a pair of boots, the man weighed it and said it would cost me £5.00 as the label H&M had provided didn't state free P&P. Very annoyed, I took the parcel back and later rang customer services who asked me whether the boots had arrived via a Hermes courier or DHL. I didn't know. Forgive me if it's difficult to recall which of my 5 different deliveries arrived with a regular post man and which arrived via courier. She said I'd need to arrange for a courier to come and collect the boots, and this would be done in around 3 days time. So depending on how H&M send your item, you may be required to arrange a pick-up with a courier rather than simply popping it back in the post. After this long ordeal, I then discovered it takes them up to 30 days to refund the money!

Needless to say, I won't be ordering from H&M online again. It's not worth the fuss. I honestly cannot believe just how bad this experience has been. I've mentioned it on Twitter and I'm not the only one, it seems a lot of people have had a shockingly bad experience.

How was your experience with H&M online?

  3. About a month ago, i made a purchase from H&M online aswell. I also regret it. My parcel took 3 weeks to arrive even though both items were in stock. I also found the whole purchasing experience extremely difficult and feel H&M should definately be sorting this out. I tried to contact H&M about my order a week ago but have yet to of heard anything. Very disappointed :(

  5. I had a similar experience. I placed an order and chose pay now and it all seemed to go through fine. It was about a fortnight after and I got nothing so I checked on my order and it hadn't even gone through?? Even though I got a confirmation email. No money was taken, which was a relief but it's such a stupid system and so confusing!

I'd rather just go and buy instore! xx

  6. I've refused to order online simply because of these sort of reviews. They really need to look into this problems and listen to their customers.

  7. Oh dear god. I'm glad you let us know about this. They raved about this and hyped everyone up but seeing as they can't even delivery items amongst other basic webstore functions, I doubt they'll be seeing a big profile in online purchases!

  8. I haven't ordered anything but I keep reading about how bad their delivery service is. Several months is a joke! I find it hard to navigate their online store anyway. Would rather just go in store x

  9. Wow, just reading this made me feel headachey! What a nightmare. Hardly a spot of retail therapy eh? I had considered ordering online with H&M but I definitely won't bother now. Like you say, not worth the hassle. Especially not when I've had far more pleasant online shopping experiences with ASOS etc. Thanks for the post! xxx

  10. Whilst reading this my mouth dropped open and stayed that way til the end. I cant believe that, what a palavor!!

I ordered a few shirts from them in September it said I should expect it in October but in all took 2-3weeks to deliver, I thought that was bad. It seems it would be easier for me to go with my buggy and brave the busy shops at least I would have the goods there and then and can get a Refund!!! Online shopping is supposed to be stress free!

They need to sort it all out ASAP!!

    Rant over lol :o) xxx

  12. Wow, I'm glad I'm not the only one!
I placed an order in October and only just got my parcel a few days ago.
The first one got lost, so they promised to send another one with a 10% discount. the lady I spoke to said the 10% would just be refunded back to my card. Then i got an email a few days later saying I'd placed an order by telephone but hadn't paid for it! So i called them and another lady said the 1st one should have refunded the whole amount back to my card, and then placed another order taking the money again (with the 10% discount). So that took another few days and then the 2nd parcel arrived around 3 weeks later!!
They are absolute jokers- definitely won't be ordering from them again.

  13. I am sorry to hear about the issues a few ppl had with H&M online, I was delighted to see they finally have an online shop and soon after i started oredering. The parcels arrived rather quickly (less than a week) and the things i did not like i sent back via courier for free, usually when my next delivery was due. I did exchange a few items in store and when i had issues (i.e their website wasn't working properly and could not checkout my items) i called customer service or emailed them through my iphone H&M app and the replies were prompt and useful. There were a few items that were not available but it was my choice whether i wanted to wait until they were available or cancel them. There were times i did cancel and times i did not but i have never been charged twice the delivery charges. It may be a bit confusing all those payment methods but i always paid with a card or the one time i had to order via phone i got a payment slip in my parcel and paid via my bank's online banking service. As for the customer number and password i just stored it on my computer and i log in automatically. For me its easier to shop online for the items that are selling fast in shops, especially small sizes. Hope this helps...

  17. OMG I am not the only one who has awful experience with H&M, I ordered 3 items, 2 turned up the other didnt, I phoned and complained they said it was out of stock and would be sent off when it arrived back in stock, I then received it 4 weeks later with an invoice stating I owed them the money for the top and had to pay via bank transfer or through my local bank, even though I had already paid and had the invoice from the old order stating this, I phoned up and it was such a hassle, will deffinatley avoid ordering off H&M online again, it is such a shame as I was so looking forward to another store to add to my constant online shopping.

  18. It seems like nearly everyone i've spoke to about H&M's online service has had a bad experience, myself included.

I bought the much sought after Aviator Jacket online, i ordered it at the start of September and was told that it would be delivered in 'November', no particular date or anything! It eventually turned up mid November. 1 month and a half after i placed the order!

I totally agree with the login problems too, i didn't even recieve an email containing my 4 digit password, after a series of emails to the customer service team they told me that for some reason a password hadn't been issued to my email address, very helpful for when you want to track your order . . . i eventually recieved a password, and managed to access my account.

They definately need to improve the online store and service, i won't be purchasing anything else on their website now, i think i'll stick to the shop! :)

Sorry for the essay, got a tad carried away!

  19. I also placed a couple of orders and waited weeks for them to arrive. Their online system is very strange indeed! And I've returned something via courier last week but dont know when that will be refunded. Its all rather odd and very frustrating.

  20. After reading this, I will definately not be ordering from H&M, more hassle than its worth!

  21. I agree with everything you've said - ordering is so much more hassle than it's worth! The only part I liked was returning something to the store x

  22. i had the exact same experience as you. ordered through them (which was hard enough trying to work out how to do that!!) and then had to wait an age for the delivery. however i wanted to return all the items which felt near on impossible to do and i have to wait near on a month for my money back. for such a big store im surprised they havent got the service better xx

  23. OUCH! That's so horrible.. why would anyone offer products that are not available! That is just POOR customer service... If that happened to me, it might make me want to skip the store all together! Which- I have done before with a different store.
Thanks for the heads-up! Hopefully they will get it together soon. Sorry to hear about your experience :/

  27. Wow, H&M online is going to fail if their delivery is that bad ...I couldn't even get to the buying stage as the skirt I wanted was all sold out (damn sale!) by the time I managed to locate my pass number and customer number!!

Hope the pieces you kept were worth the hassle :)

  28. I had a horrible experiance with H&M too and posted a little warning blog entry. I ordered 3 items from their website when it opened, my parcel turned up 3 weeks later ripped to shreds with 2 items missing. A phone call to their customer service team left me happy when they claimed I'd have to pay to re-order the items but she'd send them first class and give me a next day refund. However I recieved the items another 2 weeks on, it took another 5 calls to finally get my money refunded as they claimed I had to 'send back my missing items to get a full refund'?! and were generally unhelpful. Never again!

  29. Wow, found this post useful, their site is seriously lacking in the usability department compared to Asos and Topshop. For such a large company, I would've expected better as their site contains so much dross. Hopefully they will figure it out soon.

  30. I've never ordered anything with H&M, I was going to order some makeup however I think I'll have to pass after reading this! It sounds so awful?!
