Hot Buttered Rum

With the crisp cold weather there's nothing more enjoyable than snuggling up in toasty warm socks, a huge knitted cardigan and wrapping your hands around a hot beverage to take the chill off. After we finished putting up our Christmas decorations this year, we settled down with a mug of the ultimate festive drink and I thought I'd share it with you. Last year I was sent a sample of Philosophy's Warm & Toasty Christmas Gift Set which included the most delicious smelling shower gel I'd ever come across - Hot Buttered Rum. It sounded so delicious I went ahead and whisked up a batch using the recipe they'd printed on the bottle. And it was heaven.

Ingredients
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup butter
2 cups ice cream
1/2 tsp of cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
Rum
Boiling water

Directions
Combine the sugar, brown sugar and butter in a medium saucepan and cook over a low heat until the butter is melted, stirring occassionally. Combine the mixture with ice cream in a large bowl. Add cinnamon and nutmeg and beat until smooth. Store in the freezer. For one serving, fill 1/4 mug with mixture, add 1oz rum and 3/4 boiling water. Stir and top with whipped cream if desired.

The result is a sweet, buttery drink with a hint of rum and subtle spices running through it. Of course you can alter the quantities to make it more or less sweet/alcoholic depending on your personal preferences. And there you have it, the perfect Christmas drink!

What's your favourite drink for the festive season?
