Documenting Family Life

documenting-motherhood project-life

When Henry was born, I did what any new parent does – I took thousands of photographs. I wanted to capture every detail, every marvellous curve and feature of this miraculous little being that Matt and I had created. I was enthralled by him, mesmerised by his miniature perfection. Before I knew it, I had thousands upon thousands of photographs of the most precious person in my life.

It didn’t stop there. I continue to capture our family life together; our move to America, my pregnancy, Everly’s milestones. Documenting family life is so valuable. Not only for our immediate gratification (who doesn’t love looking back at family memories?) but also for future generations. I love to envisage our great, great grandchildren looking through our photographs, piecing together who we were as a family unit.

I like to capture our ordinary, every day moments as well as the big events. It’s the small, seemingly insignificant details of our day that I want to document; the mundanity of everyday life that tells our story and provides a snapshot of our rhythm in the current season of our lives. It’s the everyday moments that are easily overlooked but yet, it’s the little things that are so much a part of what makes up who we are.

Take pictures of the pieces that tell the story of your life.

My iPhone captures sweet spontaneous moments, whilst my DSLR creates beautiful keepsake photographs. And once I’ve captured those moments, its important to keep them safe. I’ve partnered with HP for their launch of the new 15-inch laptop, which is the perfect accompaniment for memory keeping. I selected the classic silver which compliments the rest of my office decor, but it’s also available in blue, white, red and teal, to suit your style needs. What stands out to me and makes this the ideal accessory to document family life is the storage capacity – an impressive 2TB of hard drive.

Being able to hold our family memories – the photographs as well as the videos – all in one place is ideal for snuggling for a trip down memory lane together. My thousands of precious family memories can be stored away and opened up whenever I need to access them. And it means selecting photographs for my Project Life albums becomes an easier task as I’m not switching between different places looking for items – it’s all there, in one place.

documenting-childhood documenting-project-lifeI’ve created a first year album for each of our children, and my goal is to continue completing one family album each year. A beautiful catalogue of our lives together.

How do you document family life?
